If you love the water, there’s no reason your dog can’t join the fun! With the right prep and gear, your furry first mate can enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, or boating right alongside you. Here's how to do it safely and stress-free.

Know Your Dog

Not all dogs are water lovers. Make sure your pup is comfortable around water, can swim (or wear a life jacket), and isn’t easily spooked by new sights and sounds.

Must-Have Gear

  • Dog life jacket (with a handle!)

  • Non-slip mat for boards or boats

  • Harness + leash (only for on land—never tie your dog on the water)

  • Dog-safe sunscreen (especially for light coats)

  • Fresh water + bowl

  • Towel + shade spot

Ease Them In

Start on dry land. Let them explore the kayak, board or boat, then try short, calm trips in shallow water. Use treats and take it slow—confidence builds over time.

Keep It Short + Sweet

Choose calm waters and short outings at first. Watch your dog’s body language, offer breaks, and keep it fun. Tired dogs = wobbly pups.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t force it—some dogs just aren’t into it.

  • Don’t skip the life jacket.

  • Don’t use a leash in the water.

  • Don’t forget poop bags!

Paws + Paddle = Summer Goals

With a little practice and the right setup, you and your dog can make the most of the water together. So grab the treats, snap a few pics, and float into your next adventure.

Happy paddling!
