The Unofficial Rules of Sharing a Bed with a Dog

Every dog owner knows that your bed isn't really your bed anymore. The moment you invite your pup up for "just a few minutes," you've unknowingly signed an unwritten agreement that they now have equal—or greater—claim to the mattress. If you're one who shares a bed with your furry friend, you know there are a few unspoken universal rules.
Rule #1: The Biggest Bed Belongs to the Smallest Dog
Own a Chihuahua? Congratulations—you're now sleeping on the outer three inches of a king-size mattress. Somehow, dogs have mastered the art of stretching into impossible positions that take up 90% of the bed while weighing less than your laundry basket. It's impressive, really.
Rule #2: Once They're Comfortable, You Must Never Move
Your leg has fallen asleep. Your arm is completely numb. You desperately need to roll over.
Too bad! If your dog is peacefully snoozing on top of you, disturbing them is simply not an option. The discomfort builds character.
Rule #3: Blankets Are a "Shared" Resource
You started the night wrapped in a cozy comforter. By morning, your dog is tucked in like royalty while you're clinging to a corner of the blanket that's roughly the size of a dish towel.
Rule #4: Personal Space No Longer Exists
Some dogs prefer sleeping at the foot of the bed. Others curl up against your legs. And then there are the cuddle enthusiasts who believe your pillow is our pillow.
Rule #5: The Middle of the Night Is Prime Time for Rearranging
Just when you've reached your deepest sleep…
Shake.
Stretch.
Turn around five times.
Flop dramatically.
Congratulations. Your dog has entered their midnight renovation phase.
Rule #6: Every Sound Requires Investigation
A leaf blows outside. Someone closes a car door three houses away. A squirrel dares to exist.
Your dog immediately transforms from sleeper to neighborhood security system.
Rule #7: You Will Somehow End Up in the Most Awkward Position
You'll wake up twisted like a pretzel, one foot hanging off the bed, and your pillow halfway on the floor. Meanwhile, your dog looks completely refreshed after sleeping like a starfish for eight uninterrupted hours.
Rule #8: You Secretly Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way
Sure, sharing your bed means less room, interrupted sleep, and the occasional paw in your face.
But it also means warm cuddles, happy sighs, and waking up next to one of your favorite companions. After all, our dogs are simply happy just being close to us, and that's a pretty great feeling to fall asleep to every night.
