We love our dogs to pieces—but let’s be honest, sometimes they can get a little… ripe. Whether it’s that “wet dog” smell, some mystery stink from the backyard, or just general doggie funk, keeping your pup fresh between baths can be a challenge. Here's how to freshen things up the gentle way.
1. Brush Often = Less Funk
You’d be amazed at how much stink hides in fur. Regular brushing helps remove dirt and loose hair. It also spreads natural oils, which actually help keep your pup's coat healthier and less smelly.
How often?
Short-haired dogs: 1–2 times a week
Long-haired dogs: every other day (at least)
2. DIY Doggie Deodorizing Sprays
Skip the chemical-laden sprays and try a simple, homemade version instead.
Natural Dog Freshening Spray
1 cup distilled water
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (it helps neutralize odors)
A drop or two of dog-safe essential oil like lavender or chamomile (optional*)
Mix in a spray bottle, shake, and spritz lightly over your dog’s coat (avoid eyes and face).
*Note: Not all essential oils are safe for dogs. Always research first or check with your vet!
3. Paw Patrol: Wipe Those Feet!
A lot of the dirt and odor your dog brings in comes from their paws. Wipe them off with a damp cloth or pet-safe wipe after walks, especially on rainy days or muddy adventures.
4. Fresh Pup = Fresh Stuff
Even the cleanest dog will start to smell if their surroundings are funky. Wash your dog’s bedding, blankets, and plush toys regularly.
Pro Tip: Add a splash of white vinegar to the wash to help eliminate odors naturally.
5. Dry Shampoos & Spritzes (The Natural Kind)
Natural dry shampoos made with baking soda, cornstarch, or oatmeal are great between baths. They absorb oil and odors, and many are safe for dogs with sensitive skin.
Or DIY it: Lightly sprinkle baking soda over your dog’s coat, rub it in gently, then brush it out thoroughly.
6. A Healthy Dog Smells Better
Bad smells can sometimes come from dental issues, skin infections, or diet. Make sure your dog’s breath, ears, and skin smell normal. Healthy teeth = less stink! Brush your dog’s teeth regularly or give vet-approved dental chews.
The Bottom Line:
You don’t need to wait for bath day to keep your dog smelling sweet(ish). With a few natural tricks, some regular grooming, and a bit of attention to their environment, your pup can stay fresh, clean, and cuddle-worthy—all without the stink.
